The 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards did not seem to think American rappers were worthy of being listed as top of the game this year. Instead, they voted that this genre of Urban music was better coming from Canada’s city called ‘the 6.’ Rapper Drake won the awards for Hip Hop Artist of The Year and Hip Hop Hop Song of the Year for his 2016 music.
Who was he up against?
Drizzy beat out DJ Khaled, Future, J. Cole, and Desiigner for Hip Hop artist of the year. The only real competition he had was J. Cole from the group. The NC flame-spitter caused a frenzy on the internet when his album dropped, calling out whack rappers on “Everybody Dies” and Kanye West on “False Prophets.”
For best Hip Hop song, his single “One Dance” was somewhat undeniable though he wasn’t technically rapping. He beat out “All The Way Up” from Fat Joe and Remy Ma, his own song “Controlla,” the super hit “Panda” from Desiigner, and DJ Khaled’s “For Free” which also featured him. Nominated 3 times essentially, it is hard to lose.
These awards go on to add to his phenomenal 2016 year of achievements. Drake was the most streamed artist of last year with 4.7 billion streams on Spotify alone. At the Grammy awards the 6-god won two trophies. First he won the Best Rap Song Grammy and repeated walking to the stage for Best Rap/Sung collaboration for ‘Hotline Bling.’
Other rappers to score a trophy at the iHeartMusic Awards included Chance The Rapper, who just donated $1-Million-Dollars to Chicago Public Schools, and Detroit’s Big Sean.
How did J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q get left out of the list of ‘winners’ ? Who knows and who cares. The streets and YouTube views say a lot.
